Heal Community is a recovery-focused web application designed to support patients recovering from surgery or medical procedures through accountability, peer support, and telehealth integration. The platform combines wellness tracking with social engagement, helping users stay motivated throughout the recovery process by connecting them with others on similar journeys.
The project focused heavily on creating an experience that felt calming, approachable, and emotionally supportive while remaining accessible to users with varying levels of technical experience.
Problem
Recovery can often feel isolating, especially for patients navigating long rehabilitation timelines without consistent support or accountability. Many healthcare tools focus only on clinical functionality, leaving little room for emotional encouragement, motivation, or community-driven engagement.
The challenge was to design a platform that balanced healthcare utility with a more human-centered experience. Users needed an interface that felt simple, reassuring, and easy to navigate during a physically and emotionally vulnerable time.
Key Goals
Reduce feelings of isolation during recovery
Encourage consistent engagement and accountability
Simplify complex health interactions for users with different levels of tech familiarity
Create a calming visual experience aligned with wellness and recovery
Support communication between patients and healthcare providers through telehealth functionality
Design scalable UI patterns that could grow with future platform features
Research / Analysis
The project began with collaborative discovery sessions with the client to better understand patient needs, platform requirements, and long-term product goals. Early conversations revealed that emotional support and ease of use were just as important as core healthcare functionality.
To validate assumptions and reduce friction early in the process, I created low-fidelity wireframes and structured walkthrough prototypes that simulated the user journey before high-fidelity design began. This allowed stakeholders to experience the product from the patient’s perspective and helped uncover additional requirements and usability concerns early in development.
The UX strategy centered around minimizing cognitive load and making the platform feel supportive rather than clinical. Key decisions included:
Simplified navigation and clear task hierarchy
Familiar social interaction patterns to encourage engagement
Calm visual styling and generous spacing to reduce stress and improve readability
Mobile-first considerations for accessibility and ease of use during recovery
Consistent UI components to support scalability and user familiarity
Accessibility and usability were also prioritized throughout the design process to ensure the experience remained approachable for users with varying physical abilities, emotional states, and technical confidence.
Functional prototypes were shared early with both stakeholders and target users to gather usability feedback before development. Initial testing highlighted strong engagement with the peer support features and confirmed that users found the interface intuitive and encouraging during recovery.
Feedback from these sessions informed refinements to navigation structure, onboarding flow, and interaction clarity. Iterative testing also helped validate the balance between healthcare functionality and community-driven engagement, ensuring neither aspect overwhelmed the experience.
The structured UX process helped create strong alignment between stakeholders, product goals, and user expectations before development began. Early prototype testing increased client confidence in the direction of the product and established a clearer roadmap for implementation.
Positive early feedback from target users on usability and engagement
Increased stakeholder confidence through interactive prototypes and walkthroughs
Established a scalable design foundation for future platform growth
Created a more emotionally supportive recovery experience through peer-driven interaction
Delivered a clear development roadmap informed by research and usability feedback
The final product successfully balanced wellness, accountability, and healthcare functionality in a way that felt approachable, supportive, and easy to use during recovery.
